The ACEO Project

My group of four Alice in Wonderland themed ACEO cards with colored pencil were created exclusively for my nieces and nephew. My new project encourages me to create monthly and exposes my family to original art.

I have three beautiful nieces and one totally cool nephew. They live almost a thousand miles away so i rarely get to see them. But to keep Auntie closer to them I decided to share the ultimate piece of me.

So for Christmas I created custom albums using three ring binders and scrapbooking supplies. They each have their own book full of empty trading card collecting pages and three original art cards to start them out.

Now, every month they receive one more card to add to their book. For January it was Alice in Wonderland. They get choose their favorite. This month I'm working on a more interactive gift and their cards will be chosen for them.

This is my ACEO project. The front of each book has a history on Art Cards and specifics. They can take them to school and have an artful yet educational show and tell. This is my creative solution to bond over the miles. I would love to hear your ideas, projects, and suggestions!

Too Good to be True

I recently made the decision to switch to Zibbet solely and delete my Artfire account. I have had the Zibbet account for as long but was not utilizing it fully. Since the switch I have been in love with the ease and friendliness of the site, company and other sellers.

I was in no wasy interested when I received an email from a "Something Crafted" stating 'Zibbet is dead and they are the newest FREE way to sell'. I researched it a little and determined it was a spam with unknown intent. Just now I see that I have a generic mail message from Zibbet stating that the messages came from a Zibbet account and are phishing for either IDs or account transfers.

Furthermore, I can't stand it when marketers try to pump up their product by putting down others. So even it had been legit and awesome I would have ignored the pushy message anyway.

This just goes to prove the old adage, "If it seems to good to be true, it probably is!"

The DIY Water Pages for my little ones

For those of you that read more than one of my blogs... I posted earlier in the Mom's Book of Worries about this amazingly neat idea for making printables into water pages for the kids. True to my word, I'm posting the pictures of my own DIY project here and on the MBOW facebook page.

First I assembled my supplies.

Printables on heavy weight white cardstock
Watercolor pencils & Sharpener
Water glasses
Paint brushes

In the future I want to try printing onto watercolor paper instead of card stock.

Next, I color in where the color should be and create patterns and dots with some of the watercolor color pencils. I chose two each for my kids to paint, and could have easily kept their attention longer had I made more of these for them!

My daughter cried for more, so I promised that tomorrow we'd do it all over again! More quiet time for me so win win! :)

Ok, you may be thinking I've gone completely Country with all these famous Country artist sketches, but I'm just attempting to sketch most of the performers at this month's Show-Me Music & arts Festival here in Springfield, MO.

My latest sketch honors Joe Nichols. I just love his messy hair. I bet it takes a lot of time and energy to look that perfectly disheveled!

I'm very excited to see some of these greats live. I know many of you are also, so I'm sharing my sketches on my blog and making them available to purchase at the music fest exclusively from Kel's Custom Designs. Look for her jewelry booth at the event and pick up your favorite sketch.

Country Babes in B&W

I would be remiss to sketch the hunky Country male singers and leave out some of country music's rising stars of the female persuasion. So for your viewing pleasure the first two ladies I have recently sketched in B&W are Kellie Pickler and Gretchen Wilson.

Kellie is most known for finishing sixth on American Idol's fifth season. Gretchen is most known for "Redneck Woman" but has had 5 top ten singles so far. Both are top selling artists and gorgeous gals! So here is my nod to these amazing women. Keep up the good work ladies!

My Favorite Color is Chrome!

My favorite male Country recording Artist is Trace Adkins. The recently crowned American Idol has captured millions of hearts with his low baritone voice, but my favorite booming voice has always been Trace's.

He seems like a good 'ole boy with country character. Maybe that's why he has sold so many records!

My newest Country Artist to sketch is Matt Kennon. I like to know my subject to get more details, and you might be surprised to know that Matt is adopted at birth. To get this as dark as possible I experimented with permanent ink. I had several sizes in my hand and loved the way it turned out!

OK, so not exactly what you may be thinking...

I'm not getting a tattoo of Tim McGraw, this is my latest sketch.

I wanted the contrast more severe, so I did the entire sketch with ink! No pencil lines and no smudging! The result was very crisp. What do you think?

Originally I wanted to complete a series of celebrity sketches in my sketch book and try to get them autographed, but this one was done on a separate sheet and will be made available in several sizes. Which do you think will be the most popular?

I loved placing large flowers and little hats on my infant daughter's head! I created several myself so she always had a darling accessory for her dresses each Sunday. Now that she's older but not much bigger, hair bow and clips have replaced the charming hats. Oh I still have them and they will no doubt grace my granddaughter's tiny head one day, hopefully far far from now!

But I was delighted to meet and retain the acquaintance of a very creative and posh bow maker here locally! She is like me, a mother and unable to curb her enthusiasm for creating unique accessories for her daughter, and other's daughters as well. Her passion has grown into a business, and I love the name! Ty Pennington Giveaway

The difference in the image reflected is in the mirrors used...

When an ordinary mirror is used in a kaleidoscope, light must pass through a layer of glass before being reflected by the silvering on the back of the mirror. Since glass is not perfectly clear or perfectly flat, some attenuation of the image results, along with “ghost images” caused by reflection off of the surface of the glass. These undesirable effects are compounded in a kaleidoscope mirror assembly and cause the viewing field’s outermost edges to dim, blur, and become full of interference lines.

By using aluminized front surface mirrors these problems are solved. Front surface mirror is made by vacuum depositing a highly reflective aluminum surface coating onto the FRONT of the glass. The light then reflects off the aluminized coating and does not pass through the glass. The high reflectivity (approximately 95%) and the absence of ghost images permits a brilliant image which remains clear and bright throughout the viewing field. The resulting “hall of mirrors” effect results in images and colors that are much sharper and more intense than would be possible using ordinary mirror.

Adding interesting characters to your art journal is an easy way to
construct an art journal page using things found around your home.
By collecting collage materials from everyday ephemera such as
newspapers, magazines, junk mail, school papers, and grocery lists,
you can create a character that represents you in a symbolic way.
Building a story around your new character collage is an exercise
in creativity that is both fun and enlightening.

If you don’t create in art journals, you can easily apply these
techniques to standard collage surfaces.

Materials

Journal with heavy paper such as 140-lb watercolor paper
Collage fodder (grab things that speak to you, labels,

junk mail, newspaper, magazines, etc.)

Gel medium or other collage glue
Scissors
Gesso
Assorted acrylic paints including

Titan Buff, White and Raw Umber

Acrylic glazing medium
Conte Crayon: Bistre, or Black
Blending stump
Assorted journal pens
Graphite pencil
Water soluble crayon

Pyrography

Pyrography is the beautiful art of burning pictures into wood or leather. Pyrography means "writing with fire" and is the traditional art of using a heated tip or wire to burn or scorch designs onto natural materials.

It takes much practice and a steady hand as well as basic knowledge of various techniques and pressure changes. Varying the type of tip used, the temperature, or the way the iron is applied to the material all create different effects.

I recently discovered a little gem on Zibbet know as Breath of the Dragon. The artist responsible for these designs is talented and affordable. Shoe some love, befriend her on facebook and get to know her shop on Zibbet!

Pictured is one of my favorite creations of hers, the Celtic Pentacle box. I love Celtic designs and adore boxes, so this is a win win!

Recycle

One way to recycle is to share magazines! You have a subscription you flip through then toss? Why not advertise locally to see if someone wants to trade with you? I'm always looking for back issues to pick up and have several mags that I just don't care for anymore.

Stay green and start a swap group for magazines, books, cloths, craft supplies... it's limitless! If you have a bunch of crafting friends, why not get together and trade scrapbook supplies, stickers, or even paints, markers and more!

Let me know if you have other creative ways of trading locally with friends!

I have many people ask me where I learned to make jewelry. True I taught myself many techniques, and gathered some from books and magazines, but there is nothing better than a live demonstration. I am endeavoring to learn more skills in this new year and will be trying out some classes at my favorite bead store.

Exotic Animal Safari Craft Fair

I will be at the Wild Animal Safari Craft Fair showing my latest designs in wearable art and sketch cards! The fair is to help benefit the local Firefighters! A great cause, and lots of activities for the kids!

Wild Animal Safari is a walk-through and 250 acre drive-through animal park in Strafford, MO where customers can interact with hundreds of different animals. It used to be called the Exotic Animal Paradise.

Fair Grove Heritage Reunion Craft Festival

How to make CornStarch Clay

Ingredients:

1/3 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup white glue

Mix completely. Add extra corn starch or glue to get a workable consistency.

Store in plastic baggie. Should last for months with no mold.

WHY make this?:

Projects can be air dried.
Dries like china or fine porcelain
You may color, but will have to decrease the glue content a bit or need to add more starch. It is also possible to paint after dry.
Applying hand cream before working it will create smoother creations
Skewer to create beads
Dries in 2 days or cures in oven (Heat to 350 degrees then turn off and place in oven while it cools
Can also be used to make rigid molds, they will create smaller pieces than original due to shrinkage

Options are limitless! You can find many more recipes online and tips galore. I hope this has helped get you started and given you some ideas.

Try rolling out very thinly, then leave over night. In the morning use punchies to create designs before it is completely dry.
Expect up to 30% shrinkage as dries
Spray finished project with clear fixative to resemble porcelain

How to Draw the Nose From Any Angle

The Major Planes

When drawing the nose, I’ll usually start by indicating the 4 major planes - top, 2 sides, and bottom. Getting the angles of these planes correct is important to show the proper perspective of the nose in relationship to the rest of the head. Keeping it this simple in the beginning helps to ignore the details and focus only on the width to height relationship of the entire shape of the nose and to compare it to the rest of the features. Once the big shapes and the perspective are solved, it’s much easier to add the details on top.

Anatomical Information

I think the anatomical shapes in the nose are really interesting. It’s made up of interlocking pieces of cartilage and fat attached to the bone of the skull. Half of the bridge of the nose is bone and the other half is cartilage. The lateral cartilage on the bridge wedges between the two pieces that make up the ball of the nose. The nostrils connect to the ball like curled wings.

Bridge

The bridge of the nose is composed of the nasal bone, maxilla, and lateral cartilage. The nasal bone connects to the brow ridge at the glabella. The edge of the nasal bone and lateral cartilage has a thin, sharp ridge as it transitions to the side plane and then connects to the maxilla. The maxilla is usually slightly convex and gently transitions to the cheeks.

Ball

The ball of the nose (Greater Alar Cartilage) is actually made up of two halves with the lateral cartilage wedging between the two. This separation of the two halves is not always visible. The cartilage curves downward and tucks under itself to connect to the skull.

Nostrils

The nostrils (Alar Fat), made of fatty connective tissue are like wings attached to the ball of the nose. Viewed from the bottom, the nostrils connect to the face further back then the septum because of the protrusion of the tooth cylinder.

The Minor Planes

It’s important to memorize the subtle plane changes in all the different part of the nose. These subtle plane changes are usually seen as halftone shapes which to the untrained eye appear to be random. Once familiar with the minor planes, you can easily figure out what each halftone shape represents and how to design it in your drawing.

Minor Planes of the Bridge

The Glabella is shaped like a keystone. This keystone shape is slanted downward and will usually have some halftone on it connecting the eye sockets together. Immediately after the glabella, the nasal bone turns upward and then back down after the connection to the lateral cartilage. This area of connection between the nasal bone and lateral cartilage tends to be the widest part of the bridge and also creates a subtle ‘bump’ seen from the side.

Minor Planes of the Ball

The ball of the nose isn’t perfectly round, but has very distinct plane changes. It has a top, front, and bottom plane as the septum curls under itself and connects to the skull. The side plane acts as a step down to the nostril. The shape of the greater alar cartilage varies drastically from person to person. It can be soft, chiseled, large and bulbous, thin and pointy etc…

Minor planes of the Nostrils

The nostrils, also called wings, curl under themselves similar to the septum. The nostrils are not paper thin, so an indication of the front planes is crucial to give them some thickness. Don’t forget to show the curve by separating the top and side planes, usually with a gradation of tone.
The hole of the nostrils often appears as a sideways comma shape with a sharp edge at the top, and softer edge at the bottom.

Drawing the Nose

1. I start drawing the nose the same way I start drawing anything: analyze the biggest shape first. Make sure the placement on the face is correct and that the size and shape is working in relation to the other features. What’s the point in drawing any details if the underlying drawing is crooked, too big, and in the wrong place?

2. When I’m happy with the big shape I’ve established, I will lay-in some of the smaller plane indications and some anatomical information. All my lines at this point are very light, so that I’m able to easily erase them when making adjustments.

3. When beginning to shade, the first thing I do is separate the lights from the shadows. Stay simple and don’t lose control of your values.

4. At this final stage I’ll use a lot of the information we learned about the minor planes of the nose to shade in subtle halftone shifts in the light areas and reflected lights in the shadows. I try to visualize the interlocking anatomical shapes and make sure all the volumes look accurate:

This tutorial is a continuation of How to Draw the Head from Any Angle. I will go over the structure of the eye and detailed information on drawing the brow ridge, eyeball, eyelids, eyelashes, iris, cornea, and pupil.

The Basic Forms

As with the head, it’s important to understand the basic structure of the eye and the brow ridge. The brow ridge can be simplified to a box tilted back slightly. The front plane of the box represents the forehead and the bottom plane represents the plane directly beneath the eyebrows. The eye itself is a simple sphere that sits under this box.

The Eyeball

The part of the eyeball that is visible (technical term is Sclera) is commonly called the ‘white of the eye’. However, a common mistake is to literally make it white. The eye ball is a round volume and it needs to be shaded like one. Depending on the light source, usually a gradient on one side or both will do the trick.

The biggest mistake you can make is to leave the ‘white of the eye’ white, when the entire eye is in shadow. That makes it look as if the eye is glowing. Not good…

The Iris, Cornea, and Pupil

Structure of the Iris and Cornea

The iris and cornea sit on the eyeball like two bowls. The iris is a slightly concave bowl (like a crater) and the cornea is a convex bowl (like a hill). The cornea is much like a transparent contact lens, so the iris and pupil are visible behind it.
The shape and angle of the iris is commonly overlooked. It will only be a perfect circle from front view. When the eye moves around, the shape becomes an oval and the angle changes depending on the direction of the gaze:

The further the iris is from center, the narrower the oval will become.

To find the angle of the oval, draw a straight line from the center of the eyeball to the iris. The angle will be perpendicular to this line.

The Pupil

It’s important to remember that the pupil is on the iris, not the cornea. In fact, the pupil is a hole in the iris that lets light in. The pupil dilates to let in more light and contracts to let in less light. So, when drawing the pupil from a side angle, be sure to draw it on the iris.

Shading the Iris, Cornea, and Pupil

Understanding the structure of these forms is important for when you start shading them. The pupil is easy. Its always a black dot on the iris. When we describe the color of someone’s eyes, we are describing the color of the iris. The iris must be shaded like a concave form. If the light source is from the top, the bottom of the iris will be lit. If the light source is from the left, the right side of the iris will be lit, and so on… The cornea will be the exact opposite, because it is a convex form. This is easier to understand with an image:

Since the cornea is transparent, the only part that will be visible is the highlight. So, an easier way to remember all this is… The highlight on the cornea will usually be on the dark part of the iris.

The Eyelids

Eyelids Are Not Flat

Try not to draw the eye lids as if they are flat on the face. The eyelids must wrap around the eyeball. Think of two beanies on a soccer ball.

Also, the lids have some thickness to them, so showing the bottom plane of the top lid and the top plane of the bottom lid is very important. If the light source is above the eye, as it usually is, the top lid will have a shadow on its bottom plane and the bottom lid will have a highlight on its top plane.

The Shape of the Eyelids

The shape of the opening between the eyelids is one that confuses most of us at one point or another. It’s complex and it changes as the eye moves. From the front, in a relaxed position, it looks something like this:

Notice the angle of the peaks. The top lid peaks closer to the nose, while the bottom lid peaks closer to the ear. Do not draw a generic goldfish cracker. The tear duct shape also adds some complexity. It is not centered between the lids, but is a bit lower towards the bottom lid.
From the side, the shape resembles a triangle with the cornea poking out. The tear duct is hidden at this angle since it is behind the eyeball.
Another factor that will change the shape of the lids is the cornea. Since it is a convex form, as the cornea moves it will push the lids out. Notice how the shape of the lids changes as the eye moves.

Eyelashes

The trick with eyelashes is to simplify them. I like to group them together into chunks and draw them as simple dark shapes. From the front, the dark shape of the lashes will merge with the dark shadow under the top lid. If the lashes are long and curl up enough to be seen as individual lashes, still try to simplify them rather than drawing each lash. I like to draw them blurry as if they are out of focus. From the side, the shape is like a curly triangle.

The Brow Ridge

The brow ridge acts like an awning to protect the eye. Similarly, the top lid extends forward further than the bottom lid.
The eyebrows sit on the brow-ridge and peak towards the outer end. The outside ends tend to be lighter, thinner, and have less hair than the inside ends. The shape of the eyebrows varies from person to person. Men tend to have fuller and straighter types while women have thinner types that peak higher.

Display Cases

Displaying Art comes in many forms, most recently though it has been a glass box. My local library has a large glass display case for showcasing local collections and information. I started noticing that it was on;y full of events notices and decided to bring in my art.

They were thrilled to have it available and this is the second month I have showcased some of my favorite pieces in the case. I think next month I'll fill it with jewelry pieces and photography. I highly recommend it if you have a secure place at your local library. It is a free way to show the locals what treasures they have just next door!

DAWG stands for Designing Artists Women's Group. they are a very talented, wonderful group that love the Lord and art. I am lucky to be counted among them. They are a wealth of information, resources and friendship. I love that it encompasses all ages and styles! I have learned much about my own style both as an artist as well as a mother.

Gone With the Kids

Gone with the Wind is one of my all time favorite books made into an epic movie! The story, characters and colors continue to inspire me. So when faced with a landscape challenge I decided to paint my favorite scene.

This was not easy with my 3 year old son peeking over my elbow and insisting it was indeed his turn to paint now. Trying to paint in arm's reach of chubby fingers is a lot harder than it seems! But my painting and sanity survived!

This is the result of my labors. A watercolor base with black acrylic watered down a touch for silhouette. It is remarkably like the original and frame-able at 11X14 inches in size. I will be looking out at Tara with Scarlett and her father for a long to come now that this work is finished.

Primitives

Primitives refer to decorations for your home that are Colonial, and Classic American.

They are usually very rustic, or are made to appear much older by playing with finishes.

Above is an ACEO I created to honor this tradition for my kitchen. It graced my wall in a tiny black frame for several years. I loved all the elements and wanted something that incorporated them all. It was impossible to find, so in true primitive style, I made it myself.

Copper and tin play a big role in prim design as well. As do tiny check patterns, gingham, and chintz. I saw a curtain made up from thin scraps of these fabrics knotted over a tension rod. It was so charming and effective. Go classic country and pick up a few primitives for your home. You'll love their personality and lived in feel!

Find Your Inner Artist

Find You!

Everyone is creative. Find your source and explore it. Do something childish if you cannot figure anything else out. And think back to school days for inspiration.

Today I find myself thinking about Haiku's. The 5/7/5 rule of poetry that doesn't rhyme. I never got it. In school I thought it was ridiculous to have a poem that didn't rhyme. I preferred the sonnets completely. But it is always a goal of mine to do something new and fresh when I feel most stagnant.

SO find something new to try today and don't be too hard on yourself. You don't have to share or even keep it, just do it with your two hands and in a real way. You'll get a buzz out of feeling connected again, and challenges help spur us to growth.

Inspiration

The horse is a beautiful animal, strong, often wild, and graceful. I have long been inspired by their lines and structure. They come in so many varied colors, patterns and sizes that is truly hard to find an end to this source.

I am also well know for my love of trees, cats (feral and domestic) and my family. So to tap into my inspiration seems an easy task. I am constantly surrounded by one or another of my passions and this keeps my creative focus sharp.

It is still, however, difficult to carve out time to devote to these endeavors and I find time management low in my skill sets. Why is it that creative types are often the worst at maintaining schedules and deadlines? It is for that very reason that I chose a career outside my passion for art.

Whatever your choice, your inspiration should be easy to discover. It is the single element that relaxes you the most. The scene, place, person, or thing that fills your heart with pride and your soul with peace. We as humans are hard wired to appreciate the simple beauty of a sunset because real beauty is simple after all. We know that when we are born, somewhere along the way we loose track of it and buy into the commercialized version.

Artists have the task of bringing us all back to that innocent realization that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and is therefore open to interpretation. The basic truths still apply to beauty, and that is what truly inspires. The phrase "it is what it is" comes back to me. Inspiration should be the easiest thing in the world to find.

So sit back and take in the view around you. There is color, form, texture and light play all around you. It may be the way the last sunbeam is highlighting the pile of laundry you have yet to wash, but try seeing it with different eyes. Respect the simple truth that if a sunset can makes us feel tranquil, and a grand painting make us reflective, then the beauty of life itself should leave us, at the very least, inspired. What you do with that inspiration is up to you.

To all the Mommies, Grannies, Nanas, and Aunties, Happy Mother's Day! You are the reason we don't cry at every bump in the night, the inspiration behind our most sappy phrases, and the hand at our back when we step into our own!

What would we be without the maternal support and guidance you have shown to us? There are all kinds of women, and all types of mother's. Some actually birthed us, others just nurtured, supported or inspired us as up and coming adults.

Thank you for all you do for the next generation of mothers and fathers. We are richer for the life you sacrificed, and the nights you held us instead of sleeping! Thank you for being stand up Mom's and fill-in role models. To all the strong women in our lives, we applaud and thank you.

Movie Inspiration

Brandon Lee as The Crow

One of my favorite movies, The Crow, has inspired me to paint this profile of Brandon Lee in miniature. It was a painstaking process to try it so small, but it wouldn't be fun if it were easy!

I used a textured black paper for the base and I love the way it added to the depth. There is so much energy in that stare, and it is the absence of color that brings it out.

Artists always play with techniques and colors, and going back to the most basic of black on white is always a favorite of mine. This was a challenge in that it was reversed. The white on black is simple and stunning and perhaps a new favorite of mine.

Eat Crow

My latest sketch card, "Crow Relief", inspired me to dig into the origin of the phrase "Eating Crow". The following is from the wikipedia search:

Eating crow (archaically, eating boiled crow) is an English-language idiom meaning humiliation by admitting wrongness or having been proven wrong after taking a strong position. Eating crow is presumably foul-tasting in the same way that being proven wrong might be emotionally hard to swallow. Eating crow is of a family of idioms having to do with eating and being proven incorrect, such as to "eat dirt", to "eat your words", and to "eat your hat" (or shoe).

Its original form, to eat boiled crow, first appeared in the 1850s in America. Its exact origin is unknown but there are a number of explanations.
It may be related to the English idiom to eat humble pie. The English phrase is something of a pun—"umbles" were the intestines, offal and other less valued meats of a deer. Pies made of this were known to be served to those of lesser class who did not eat at the king’s/lord’s/governor’s table. Another dish likely to be served with humble pie is rook pie (rooks being closely related to crows).

After incumbent Harry Truman defeated Thomas Dewey in the 1948 United States presidential election despite many media predictions of a Dewey victory, the Washington Post sent a telegram to the victor:

Crafters in the Closet

So many of us have way more supplies than room to store them. Creative storage solutions are a multimillion dollar business. There are specialty stores, aisles at your local stores and magazines devoted to helping us get all that excess into neat and tidy bins.

My latest wish list includes this bin for $33. A real bargain when you see what it holds! There is even a place for your sketch books! If you are like most artists you can't stop at one medium, one style, or one sketch pad...so this is a great way to keep you organized.

Pencils, watercolors, acrylics, even oils all have a place and dividers to keep you straight. If you are tighter budgeted than medicare you may have to pass on this gem, but don't let that stop you.

I live in a small apartment with a dog, cat, toddler son, baby girl, and a husband. Needless to say there is little Mom space to be found. I found a simple enough place. The closet. It is packed full with a folding easel complete with carry case, plastic totes for each medium, and charming little handmade tags.

It is not as fancy as this box, but it serves it's purpose. Browse your local stores and find what works for you. If you are still drooling over the super satchel model pictured, then click here and add it to your craft closet.

My friend's challenge paid off! It actually got me out of my rut and into watercolor! Here is the proof of 'life' again! The little artist inside me is stretching and yawning after her long, long slumber!

Above is the actual flower bud and the resulting painting. I have to give a special shout out of thanks to my DAWG sisters, Jenny M. who challenged me to complete a new painting and of course Dawn S. T. who took the awesome photograph which was my inspiration.

Challenge yourself or a Friend!

I recently received a message through facebook from a friend offering a friendly challenge to get us both painting again. I would have never thought to do the same in reverse, but was so glad to have been challenged!

We decided on a Spring theme and are going for an ACEO or 4X6 size work of art that we can sell or auction off. It has to be water color and in that theme. We are both choosing from another friend's photos coincidentally and I cannot wait to see what she chooses!!

Just getting that email has started my creative processes again, and I am looking forward to plunging into watercolors again.

We may fail miserably, but as long as you try there is no true looser. So get out of your comfort zones. Challenge friends and neighbors to art offs and see what fun you can stir up. You might just help a stay at home Mom out of a rut or push a teacher toward new ground.

You never know how much you affect others until you try.

When all else fails...Create!

I have been feeling so low lately! Not at all creative, and very near blue. So to myself I thought am I entering a blue phase? Most artists are troubled individuals so it would not be a first or even hundreth really.

But all in all I believe I am just a plain ordinary woman with plain ordinary troubles. For someone who loves to be different this is far from reassuring! But it works.

To the point...I converted my low mood to a different path. So I don't feel like sketching or painting, I did however make a cute pair of earrings!

So the moral ladies and gents is that not every feeling you have is true, and when those negative ones are nagging you, convert it to something constructive. You never know what new hobbies await you!

Ferret Love

I hope everyone had a happy and safe Valentine's Day! My take on the holiday with ferrets went over very well. It just goes to show you that the more unique your hobby or favorites, the more priceless they become. So don't feel like you're all alone out there, there are just enough people in the world to make your favorites valuable to others as well.

The above is "You Stole My Heart" and if you've ever had a furry little ferret, you'd understand how they do just that. Enjoy your pets this holiday, and show some love to all your hobbies, no matter how bizarre!

Cold Twilight

I was inspired by this cold frozen day, with the warm sun giving up and going to bed. Just about everything was shades of blue and grey except for the bright wash of the sun over the water as it exploded through the branches and over the horizon.

What few geese were still brave enough to swim in the frigid water were making thier way to the shore, and even the sky seemed still. It was tranquil and beautiful.

The harsh contrasts set the shape of this tree off in a lovely relief that I just had to stop and enjoy. I think I shot about a dozen images of the same tree and the sun curtsying behind it. Every few seconds seemingly changing it forever. It was a cold winter day, and becoming colder with the setting of the sun, but increasingly stunning with the angles it created.

I could definitely understand why Monet or any of the greats would spend hours painting the same scene in varying shades with the sun changing everything subtly.

Twilight is truly a magic hour!

Twisted Sisters

Newly posted to my ArtFire store and available directly from my Facebook page, "Twisted Sisters" is just in time for cold and spooky nights!

I love twisted trees, and this trio was perfectly poised near the edge of the lake. They were beautiful and gray. Weathered and exposed, and magnificent as trees almost always are...especially when they front a windy shore line.

I have made this print available as a mounted metallic print or a straight black and white image. I can't decide which I love more.

I truly enjoy the way metallic coatings enhance photography, and deepen a black and white image. They make a graphic image like a tree seem mulit dimensional and layered. It brings the subject forward in a way that the film cannot.

The "Twisted Sisters" is already full of texture and vivid interest, so the classical view of simple black on white is quite simply stunning. I found a new favorite image this year!

Gail's Advice - Second Installment

So you made it through the first book! Great! Here's the latest:

#2 Close Doors

Yeah I know....you've heard this so much it's old. But it's been pounded into your head for good reason! You cannot go forward if things are left undone.

Have you ever been in the middle of Walmart and thought, "Did I turn the coffee pot off?" Your mind is in aholding pattern trying to figure it out, and you aren't enjoying or even paying all that much attention the rest of the time. And then you rush home to make sure.

Yeah, you might have been overcharged by $1 or maybe nothing happened, but if this is how you live emotionally, it costs you a lot more.

Not being present in your own life is a terrible waste of happiness. There is always a bright spot in every day, if you see it. If you are so focused on the past that you can't you are missing out on so much that life has to offer. You probably feel disappointed with your life and hopeless about it's outcome.

Most of us are unaware that we do this. It is that subconscious mind that is focusing all our energy, and our own thoughts are far from the past. In fact, most people with open doors have so many cobwebs in them, that they spend quite a bit of there thoughts on trying to forget or NOT to think of the past.

This is were "IF" kills us.

The what if's of life can really weigh us down. They always seems harmless. And they usually make us feel pretty good during the actual thought..."If I had a million dollars..."

But they can trap us there. Like being stuck in virtual reality and the rest of the world is in true color. We live and breathe, but never even 'see' another human being because we are too busy dreaming.

Dreams can be good if they motivate us to acheive something greater. But when they are what gets us through the day, they become a weight dragging us down. We start to feel even more hopeless because the dreams are so out of proportion by that point that our life seems very pale and boring next to them.

Dream. But use them as a tool to get you moving toward an obtainable goal.

Love. But love like you've never been hurt.
And that takes closing doors.

Gail's Advice In The Real World:

So you may or may not have doors to close. To know for sure pause for a moment and think about 'regrets' and 'losses' you've experienced.

Did you move through all the steps to recover from each one?

Steps are:
1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Sadness
4. Acceptance
5. Contentment

You can do these steps all in a day or over several years. But they are almost always in that order and need to be completed before a door can shut.

When you reach the point where you can look back at a loss or regrettable situation and not feel an emotion associated with it. Then you have reached contentment and that door is shut.

I personally don't believe in locking doors. Even a painful occurrence made you who you are and can be looked back on to grow or to help someone else going through a similar situation. If that door was locked you would try to avoid it, and feel like something in you shouldn't be there. You may have reached a pint where you have accepted it, but you have not learned to live with it, so you are stuck at step 4.

This is true for every loss, every hurt, and every missed opportunity you have.

And you have to go back to the ones that are still there locked up tight and go through these steps again. Either where you left off or from the first one again...before you can move on to be the happiest, healthiest, and most complete you possible.

So if you cry every time you see a white cat with green eyes because you lost your beloved pet. Work on ways to deal with that loss until you are able to see one and only remember how much you adored that pet, and no longer feel the pain of it's loss.

Of course most of our pains are much more serious in nature. And you may need to go to a counselor to help you get to that point for your life.

Make the appointment.

Make a list of what you want to move on from and close finally.

Start working toward that goal, and dream about how great that will feel when you can look back without fear, hatred, or bitterness.

Most of medical problems are linked to our emotions, so you will see that start to improve as well!

Get those doors closed. They are keeping someone or something great away from your life, and you are worth the effort it will take to move on.

Tell yourself "I'm worth it!" AND "My doors are closing!" Then make it happen.

Gail's Advice - First Installment

Rule #1 Be Honest

That is perhaps the best and most difficult advice I can give you. Honesty is easily overlooked, forgotten, and under-appreciated thing we do. But it the most important.

Be honest with yourself first!

We are all guilty of taking on too much and finding ourselves wishing we hadn't later when it is too late. But those of us that find ourselves here permanently are not only lying to themselves, they are out of touch with who they are!

Why? Because their entire existence has been one long string of lies. When you lie to yourself constantly it becomes second nature. You no longer ignore that inner voice, you don't even hear it. You suffer the consequences, so you let it slide...because quite honestly those that lie to themselves that much just don't feel good about themselves period.

It starts as a defense mechanism to cope..."I'm fine, really, that's just a flesh wound, no no I don't need to have you here with me, it's ok, I'll be fine..."and on and on until you start to believe it. You feel better .... for awhile

Then you find yourself empty inside and start to self medicate. Either with food, meds, alcohol or whores, or whatever your mind tells you will numb the pain. (those are just the most common, not at all the complete list)

It all started because you were dishonest with your self and probably because your self value was destroyed. To get that back you have to start being honest. With yourself, and Everyone else too!

So Rule #1 is:
Be Honest

Start today, and don't stop. It will feel wierd...you'll start getting the tingles of that inner voice back, and then you'll feel selfish...but don't stop. Just keep on being honest! You won't be the most popular, but you'll start to heal finally.

GAIL'S ADVICE - The Real World -
The rule in action...

An example of this is: You bang your head b/c you are in a hurry and didn't close the cabinet door. Your head hurts! You take a tylenol and lie down. You wake up feeling better and as you go to get a drink you bang your head again...you weren't looking. You didn't take the time to close that door. Damn. No tylenol this time, so you let it ache and try to ignore it. But now you are throbbing and as you stumble into the bathroom you stump your big toe. "SOB" you say and throw up your hands and go back to what you were doing.

Your pains eventually go away. You feel better. You've forgotten all about that and the next day you see the door is still hanging open on the cabinet. So you close it right?

You let yourself heal, you took action to treat and you took care of the problem. So do that in your personal life too!

Rule #1 Be Honest
Start by telling people what you REALLY think! Be bold and daring. It will feel wierd awesome and even naughty. You might have to use the edited version at work, but you get the idea.

When someone asks Hey do you like this shirt, and it's hideous...say hmm no, but I'm not the one who has to wear it. Or when someone asks, "How are you today?" Try saying, better than yesterday, but only if it's true. If you are worse than the previous day, say something like not so hot today, but maybe tomorrow will be better.

Stupid? It may seem that way. But you are enforcing positive ideas that are needed to get out of this funk!! AND being honest at the same time.

That goes for eveything...

So it's the end of the month and bill collectors want to be your best friend no doubt. Calling you several times a day. When you can, answer them. Tell them you have no idea when you can pay, tell them whatever is true. Ask them if they offer any help, assistance, discounts or plans. Write it down. Make an arrangement you can actually manage. If you don't know, then just say that.

Avoidance only makes things worse...just be honest. They might still call, they might erase fees, they may even have a program that will help.
You have to ask though.

Start being honest all the time. If you don't want to do something don't say maybe, say no.

Make it a habit and start right away.

OK, so I know that was a lot...there will be more the next day and the next...
so be ready! And you don't have to read them. It's there to help, if it doesn't throw it out. And that goes for any advice you get.

Starting out is Expensive!

They say you should plan to be negative in a business for the first year or so. What? How do people start at all if you are going to be upside down for that long?

I guess it's not so much different than buying a new car. As soon as you get your business off the ground, you already have more in it than it is worth. The biggest difference is that a business can grow and earn value.

I am doing everything possible to keep my costs down, so I will gain profit. Otherwise, I won't be able to support my art or hobby. As of now, I have a dotcom site, and business cards ordered. I have several different ACEO cards for sale in three different places, and I am only out $90.

Not too shabby! I think I have the nack for this frugal business start plan!
